8Getting There & Away
Air
The airport is located 6km east of town. Uzbekistan Airways ( GOOGLE MAP ; %65-225 39 46; Bukhara Airport) has flights from Bukhara to Tashkent at least daily.
Figure on around 6000S for the 10-minute taxi trip between the centre and the airport.
Bus & Shared Taxi
All eastbound transport leaves from the North Bus Station, about 3km north of the centre. Here you’ll find private buses to Navoi (7000S, 2½ hours), Samarkand (30,000S, 4½ hours) and Tashkent (40,000S, eight to 10 hours).
Just to the north or across the road are more reliable shared taxis to Navoi (20,000S, one hour) and Tashkent (80,000S, 6½ hours). Shared taxis to Samarkand (50,000S, three hours) often involve a change of car in Navoi.
About 1.5km north of here is Karvon Bazaar, departure point for Urgench and Khiva-bound transport. Shared taxis congregate in a lot on the less-crowded south end of the market. The going rate is 70,000S to 80,000S per seat for Urgench (five to six hours). You might find a direct ride to Khiva for a little more, but it's more likely that your driver will just put you in another shared taxi on arrival in Urgench. Sporadic morning buses to Urgench pass through from Tashkent on the main road in front of the taxi stand, but you are better off with a shared taxi.
To get to the North Bus Station and Karvon Bazaar take bus 9 (700S) from the Lyabi-Hauz marshrutka stop in front of the Asia Hotel and Taki-Telpak Furushon Bazaar. A cab here will cost you 5000S, or 6000S to Karvon Bazaar.
The Sharq (Eastern) 'bus station' east of the centre no longer has any buses, but it's still a shared taxis departure point. Transport runs to Karshi (30,000S, two hours), Shakhrisabz (60,000S, four hours) and Denau on the Tajik border (70,000S, six hours). Change in Karshi for Termiz (from Karshi 50,000S, five hours). A taxi from the centre costs 5000S.
If you are headed to the Turkmen border make your way to the Markaziy (Kolkhoz) Bazaar and pick up a shared taxi ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) to Karakol or Olot.
